The Beagle Gang

Cagney

Cagney is the little matriarch of the pack, the calm voice of reason, except when she thinks there’s a chance of any food to be had, then she is the most excited of them all. She’ll eat pretty much anything, and especially treats, cheese and fruit. She likes to lean on her humans and get belly scratches. Cagney is very loving and loyal, and very attached to Lacey. Cagney and Lacey came to us as sisters, which they may or may not be, but they are very deeply bonded. We always call them “the girls.”

Lacey

Lacey is a lot like her sister Cagney, but much more stubborn, with a strong mind of her own. She likes to join Benson in playing with Starsky, and barks and chases her tail when she gets excited. Like Cagney, she loves treats, cheese and fruit. Lacey is very attached to Cagney, and likes to demand pets. When she has had enough pets she finds somewhere comfortable to curl up. Cagney and Lacey are named after the two female NYPD detectives from the 1982-1988 TV show by the same name.

Starsky

Starsky was abandoned at 15 weeks old at our local vet. He is the most loving, playful, squishy little cuddle bug, small, with big paws, lots of wrinkles, very unusual really light eyes, and “an old man’s face.” One of his nicknames is Mr Smooshy. He wants to be friends with everybody, no matter the species. He loves to play fetch and doesn’t care too much about treats, though he usually will eat them, especially if one of the other dogs seems interested in his treat. He likes to always be near me, preferably touching, or sits under my chair and at my feet. We adopted Starsky at the same time as a senior Beagle, Hutch, who he loved to play with, but who has, sadly, passed away. Starsky and Hutch are named after the 1975-1979 TV show (and subsequent movies) about two detectives (and their red-and-white Ford Gran Torino) by the same name.

Benson

Benson came to us having already been adopted and returned twice. We have no idea why as she is a very affectionate sweet girl who likes to make friends with people and hug them (she is very shy around other dogs). She uses her paws to demand pets. She loves to sit outside and watch for squirrels or cats, who will be chased away immediately. She is very fast, and likes to play rough with Starsky and steal his toys. She is very picky about which treats she likes (down to the brand of cheese she is offered). Even though she is the biggest of the pack, she thinks she is a lapdog and can curl up really small to fit almost anywhere. Benson was named after NYPD Detective Olivia Benson portrayed by actress Mariska Hargitay on the TV show Law & Order: Special Victims Unit that started in 1999 and is still running today.
